I can come up with decent shading when I'm working with bitmap files. But as soon as I save it as a .gif, it becomes blotchy.
I know .gif files can only use so many colors, which is significantly less than a bitmap.

But I see plenty of people who have gorgeous shading without seeming to lose detail.
How do you guys do that?

Ok: like 5 seconds after I read this, I tried that :P

When I make the background transparent, it still messes up the pose.
Ideas?

It becomes extremely blotchy.
I don't know how to show you the bitmap file because photobucket doesn't support them.
But, I took the opportunity to use this little pose of Gala's to practice:

This is the .gif image:

And this is where I attempted the .png:

The .png is better, but not as nice as the bitmap.
It goes blotchiest on the tail and up around the mane, where the bright green colors are.

Are you reducing colors when you make the background transparant?

The only thing I can think of (I don't know PS7), but is the number of colors are getting reduced (256 colors is max and shouldn't get pixely, lower then this you will start to notice). That often happens with gifs on Photoshop.

I just use the background eraser. Make the background a color different then your pose and then use the eraser.
